Brief Overview

 

Welcome to the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) of the University of Ghana. The School forms part of the schools in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. It offers students the opportunity to discover and fulfil their potentials in various fields of science in our already existing and new academic programmes that are geared towards preparing students for careers in this changing national and international world.

 

The Departments in the School prepare first year students of the Medical School, Dental School, Nursing School and the Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences. The School also has a larger portion of International students including postgraduates. The School runs various projects among which are the World’s Bank project on the West Africa Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious pathogens (WACCBIP). This Centre provides Masters, PhD and Post-doctoral level training and conduct research focused on cell and molecular biology of major diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.

 

The department of Marine and Fisheries Science of the School also host the Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) Project. The MESA project is a pan-African programme that utilizes Earth Observation (EO) data for developing products and services to increase the information, management, decision-making and planning capacity of African countries. It is being implemented through 7 Regional Implementation Centers (RICs), including the ECOWAS Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center based at the University of Ghana.

 

The School is also equipped with modern scientific instrument including Next-generation sequencing machines, Confocal microscope, X-Ray defractometer, Elisa Plate Reader, Water Quality Probe, Sea Bottom Camera device just to mention a few. These instruments aid in producing the quality of graduates we produce. As you navigate through our website we hope you find the site informative and exciting.

 

The School of Biological Sciences together with the School of Agriculture run the African Regional Programme in Insect Science. This is an interdisciplinary programme, which is aimed at training the next-generation of Insect Scientists in Africa.

 

The Objectives of the School are to:

  • Offer students the opportunity to discover and fulfil their potential in various fields of science.
  • Improve academia and industry collaboration to achieve the University’s goals.
  • Endeavour to have more postgraduate programmes and improve on our postgraduate intake.
  • Bring existing and new academic programmes that are geared towards preparing the students for careers in this changing national and international world.
  • Collaborate with other Universities both locally and internationally in all aspects of academia.
